Inauguration Of Women’s Development Cell – A Report

A Women’s Development Cell was launched at St. Mary’s College, Yusufguda, Hyderabad today, on 14th September, 2007.

The Objective of the Women’s Development Cell is to create awareness among the girls and the women staff, apart from maintaining congenial working environment for all the women employees and students. Ms. Anju Prasad is the Convener for the WDC, St. Mary’s College.

Ms. Tejdeep Kaur Menon, IG SPF, was the chief Guest and Dr. Meeta Singh Founder Secretary, Hyderabad Chapter of Indian Menopause Society, was the Guest of Honour. The Chairman of the college Mr. B. Arogaya Reddy, Secretary, Mrs. B. Mary Reddy and Mr. Mahender Reddy, Director of St. Mary’s College were also present for the program.

The Chief Guest, Ms. Tejdeep Kaur, addressed the gathering and emphasized the role of a woman in the society. The “Hand that rocks the cradles rules the world” was the main point of emphasis. Mrs. Menon also added that apart from becoming aware of the legal, medical and social rights, and duties towards oneself and the society as whole, today its also important to inculcate a sense of Values in the younger generation specially women so that they may differentiate the right from the wrong. Quoting various examples from her long service of 24 years in the Police she made the meeting very interesting, with her spontaneity and witty sense of humour.

She advised that this Women’s Development Cell also could try and reach out to the women in trouble. Women who are the victims of domestic violence, the victims who are burnt, lying in the hospital, need compassion and moral support. Visiting such people will boost up their morale and might give them the spirit to live again. Referring to the lighting of the lamp Ms. Menon advised that not only lighting a lamp for auspiciousness is important but its equally important to try and re kindle the lights of life of people who are victimized, tormented, depressed and need to be encouraged to live.

Dr. Meeta Singh agreed with Mrs. Menon regarding the need for spreading awareness. Her emphasis was more on the medical rights of the women and how girls should look after themselves right from the young age, because they are the ones who will give a healthy generation in future – “You are the ones who will rock the cradle”. She stressed on the need of the healthy mind in a healthy body for which some sort of exercise is very important, together with a balanced diet and not craving for western food. She created awareness about contraception. She promised to speak more on the medical rights exclusively on another platform, due to the time constraint. Being an expert in adolescent counseling she was able to create interest in the women students about the medical problems, precautions and rights.
