St. Mary's Report 2007-2008
It is my privilege and honor to present the annual report as a Principal of the College. The year has been truly an eventful and satisfying one. I would like to present an overview of the events, activities and achievements of St. Mary’s college during this academic year. The academic year began with the orientation programme for the freshers – both Intermediate and Degree-conducted by the Legends School of Transformation, Bangalore. The School also conducted a programme for the senior students. Both these programmes were truly a motivation for the students and put them on the right orbit. This was followed by the Freshers’ Day celebrations where in the freshers got a taste of what it was like to be St. Mary's. The college has also introduced a value added programme called, EDGE conducted by the Legends to give the advantage of a cutting edge to its students in this competitive world.
There was never a dull day for the students as all the departments geared up to celebrate and observe different International days like AIDS Day, Literacy Day, Prevention of Ozone Depletion Day, Environment Day etc. The students were also involved in community services. They enthusiastically raised funds and visited old age homes, orphanages, home for juvenile delinquents etc. It was an experience the students will cherish all their life as many of them were enriched by such visits. The Departments, on the academic front arranged guest lectures and seminars by experts from different fields. The students were also taken on various field trips and industrial tours. To mention a few, the department of Chemistry visited the Steel plant in Vizag and the department of Mass Communication went on a tour to Delhi and the adjoining places besides visiting the CNN IBN studio. Apart from these, the Department of Commerce once again organized the popular Commerce meet, CEM, where the commerce students of the twin cities had an opportunity to participate and exchange views. The high light of the meet was the key note address by the well known chartered accountant, Mr. Suresh. The Department of Computer Science replicated the success of last year by conducting the inter collegiate computer science students’ meet – HOUR GLASS which was inaugurated by Mr. Pradeep from TCS.
The competitions conducted on the Ethnic Day and Talents Day were a revelation of the talents our students had. The college also started the Adventure club, Environment club, Literary club and Science club to provide wide ranging opportunities for our students to explore the new heights beyond the academics. Prerna the popular Inter collegiate Fest, inaugurated this year by Ms. Amala Akkineni , the well known actress and animal rights activist was once again a great crowd puller and the college truly bore a festive look on both the days. The number of corporate sponsors vying with each other to sponsor the fest reaffirmed the event’s popularity in the twin cities.
The college reiterated its commitment to women empowerment and development by starting the Woman Development Cell which was inaugurated by Ms. Tejdeep Kaur Menon, IPS. The cell has been meeting regularly since then and conducting various programmes on issues so close to a woman’s heart. In collaboration with Naandi Foundation, an NGO, the WDC has been supporting causes relating to the upliftment of the girl children. The Alumni Association was activated this year and the office bearers were elected for a one year term. The placement cell has also been doing a commendable job. The Counseling Department has played a remarkable role in creating a positive learning atmosphere on the campus.
Three staff seminars were conducted to help the lecturers in their role as multitask-ers. Not just that, they also went on a picnic where they let their hair down, enjoyed themselves came back refreshed in body and mind. A seminar on the art of parenting was arranged for the parents where Ms Chandana Naik a counseling psychologist gave useful tips to parents.
The Management of St. Mary’s demonstrated its commitment for quality education by opening a 2nd lab. both in the departments of Bio-Tech and Comp.Sc. The Psychology lab was also upgraded. The English lab is being set up which will be functional in a week’s time. This is done to facilitate CBT.
The various in house publications- the college newsletter Vox Populi, the Science Club publication Beacon, the WDC mouthpiece Little Women showcased the writing skills of our students. The college annual magazine Horizon will be out shortly.
The students also won many prizes in many intercollegiate competitions and brought laurels to the college. The detailed list will be published in the college magazine.
In the area of sports the college has made tremendous progress and won laurels. Of course this is not a new achievement- for the colleges under St Mary’s Educational Society which had VVS Laxman, Padmasri P Gopichand and Sania Mirza in their ranks it is only a natural step forward. The following are some of our students who are in the national teams:

Football (boys) and Basketball(girls) – reached quarter finals in OU intercollegiate tournament. | Let me place on record the Management’s sincere appreciation for our staff. But for our Lecturers’ unwavering commitment to teaching-learning the college would not have achieved success. The degree college though in its nascent stage could achieve almost 75% results in the last academic year. Our lecturers have also been continuously striving to raise their standards to set a bench mark for our students. This academic year three of them are working towards getting their PhD’s and ten of them have registered for M. Phil. Apart from these many of them have been participating in local, national and international workshops, seminars etc. One of them also has presented a paper in a national seminar which is also published. Mr. Joseph Christadoss of the Dept of English has been selected to attend the Advanced Leadership Seminar for a month in Hawaii Islands, USA from Feb 12th 2008. The staff contributed their might in securing ISO 9001-2000 Certification. Mrs R Geetanjali, HOD, Commerce coordinated the whole effort which led to the certification. The College is in the final stage of getting accreditation from National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous body under UGC. Once again the staff rose to the rigorous demands of preparing the Self Study Report and assisted the NAAC Steering Committee. The whole process was meticulously monitored and coordinated by Mrs. Shoba Reddy, Lecturer in Chemistry. Surely, our hope of getting the top grade-‘A’ is not misplaced. The Principal and the Members of the Management are appreciative of the important role played by the administrative and the support staff in all the events and programmes of the college.
Last but not the least, the Principal and the staff express their gratitude to all the Members of the Management for their unconditional support to all the programmes of the college. The Chairman Mr. B.A Reddy, Secretary Mrs. Mary Reddy, and the Director Mr. B. Mahender Reddy were always there in every event/programme to encourage the students and the staff. A special word of appreciation for Mrs. Komal Sen, Incharge, HR for all her efforts in working for the welfare the of employees and contributing to maintain a cordial atmosphere on the campus. The Members of the Management also trusted every one of us, considered us fellow workers and partners in fulfilling the vision of making St. Mary’s a premier institution of higher education in the country. The Principal also acknowledges the valuable help and support extended to him by Mr. D. P. Rama Rao, the Degree Incharge and Mrs. I.C Madavi, the Inter Incharge in administering the college.
I take this opportunity on behalf of the Management, the Principal and all my colleagues to wish every student a bright and fruitful future ahead. May God bless you and reward all of your efforts. Thank You.
